How do you dress fashionably at middle age ?

1. Choosing the right hemline

Choosing the right hemline is important. Above the knee can be too muttony, whereas below the knee can seem a tad matronly — in your 40s it’s flattering to hit the knee.
2. Flatter your waist
Believe or not, we all have a waist hidden away somewhere and defining it is a good way to look chic in your 40s. You can use a belt with things you might not have thought to, such as shirts, cardigans and even coats. Structure is the key thing to bear in mind as you age. It helps to frame your body and face.
3. Cropped jackets & Scarves
This is one of my favourite tips. The cropped jacket really is like a magic wand of fashion. It’s youthful, and creates a great silhouette. Scarves are another big tip for your 40s. They soften your look and help to inject the latest fashionable print. But it’s important that you tie it carefully so it doesn’t look frumpy.
4. Don’t squeeze into clothes
This tip isn’t about being slim - it’s about thinking about the shape around your body that your clothes make, whatever your size. You want it to be strong and clean, with enough room to breathe and adequate material not to cling to tricky zones. So don’t squeeze yourself into clothes that are too small. Buy ones that give you the best outline.
5. Forget the mini-skirt
You’ll look as if you are competing with your teenage daughter, in a mini-skirt. You want to look good in your own right, not as if you’re desperately trying to cling on to youth.
If you still have great legs , & do not want to wear a mini-skirt any more, straight jeans  & leggings are the way for you to show them off. But it’s important to focus on just one area so we can kept the top half looser. The jacket provides structure and is reminiscent of a Chanel boucle jacket. It’s very elegant.

  1. I still have nice slim legs, you mean I cant wear mini skirt anymore? I'm 50. And I'm still wearing mini skirts- all my friends said I look great.

    1. You might still look great for your age. But I can be sure you are different from when you are 25. At middle age, certain maturity sets in no matter how good you look. That's the thing that gives you away. You'll end up trying to dress like your teenage daughter - & that's tacky. Maybe your friends are too polite to tell you. My 2 cts

    2. ouch.... the truth hurts , but I agree with the comment above. You might look the best & youngest amongst your peers, but 50 is still 50.

Certain fashion is just more appropriate for the younger people.
Don't talk about the mini skirt, even for guys, that dumb cap that rappers like to put on at the side- well if you are very young- it somehow still look ok (though still ridiculous ) but an adult putting on that way just look awfully dumb.

    3. Or the " pony tail" - looks fab with teenagers, but 40 & above ...not so good. Especially if you try to pull it back tight. It only exposes how old you are.

    4. OMG... I've lots to say about the pony tail, I hated it on middle age MEN ! Yes men not woman!!! What are they thinking??? They think they look cool or something? Worst are those who's hair is thinning already, & some even don't dye their hair, so it's thinning grey hair & a pony tail with a wrinkle face -omg.... it's awful ! Sorry if I've offended someone :))

    5. Pony tail on old men , only looks appropriate if you belong to the American natives. Other wise, agree... it just look bad on any kind of old man !

  2. Talking about squeezing into clothes, wearing over size ones (trying to hide the fats) is just as bad!
Sorry, I really do think, if you are fat, you look older!

    1. That's true. I'm like 10kg heavier than friends of my same age. I'm only in my 20s, but I look like in my 30s ....sob !

  4. Saw a woman in a very nice mini skirt & blouse like a teen, as my eyes travel up her body to her face, I almost died- she's like in her 50s- you guys are right. Even if you have been keeping fit till your 50s (& congrats for that) , your face will give you away. A mature face with a mini skirt just look bad & desperate. My 2 cts.

  5. It's unfair to associate mini skirts with youth only:((
