Can Young Blood rejuvenate & reverse the effects of aging???

I certainly hope so. Can you imagine my excitement when I read this piece of news. This definitely deserve a slot in my blog …haha.  Ok it’s just in the research stage with mice. Apparently a protein in blood can repair age-related damage in the brains and muscles of old mice, returning them to a more youthful state. This protein, called growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11), was found to have a restorative effect on mouse hearts. If it does a similar job in humans, it could have huge potential for treating a wide-range of age-related diseases.

Revitalised organs

In the brain study, the researchers injected 15-month-old mice – which is just over half their natural life span – with GDF11 daily for a month. The volume of the blood vessels in their brain increased by 50 per cent and the number of brain stem cells by 29 per cent. Both factors are known to improve brain function.

Muscle fibres in old mice injected with GDF11 doubled in size to match that of 2-month old mice. Images from an electron microscope show a striking reordering of muscle fibres from a disordered state to the highly regular appearance of young muscle.

In a separate study, they gave 18-month-old mice, the equivalent of mid-to-late middle age, eight injections of blood plasma taken from 3-month-old mice. Three weeks later, the brain cells of the older mice had 20 per cent more dendrites, the spines that relay messages between neurons, than mice given a placebo.
The mice performed about 50 per cent better on two standard tests of cognitive function. The studies show the old brain is plastic and can recover function, and that this can be done so simply, just by injecting 'young' blood plasma.
Next stop humans?
Scientist predicted they could have more answers with regards to humans in the next three to five years. They are already planning a human trial. They want to inject blood plasma from young, healthy donors into people with Alzheimer's disease to see if it improves their brain function.

  1. Seriously, who needs researches ?
Ask the Vampires, they have been at it for centuries ... lol....

  2. Shouldn't the enormous body of literary work, movies & TV series about vampires - be enough to trigger this sort of study long ago! By now, it should be able to apply to humans already :))

  3. No wonder in all those Vampire movies, the vamps always go for those pretty sexy girls. That should have sounded a bell for ALL scientists ....lol.....

  4. This is Wonderful news!
All young people will be required to donate blood to old people. That's a real good incentive to encourage couples to have larger families!!!!
Have more children so that you can "feed off" them later !!!

    1. This is terrible !!!! But it could really work ! People will want to have more children so that they themselves are ensure a longer & healthier life !

    2. Ya right, then no one dies, population explodes. Resources become depleted, we are just transferring one problem with tons of others !

    3. What if these "old" people never retires as they don't have to - since they are practically 'young' after all the new blood they could be getting from their children?
What leaves the young people- JOBLESS ????
Companies have to pay these older workers higher pay, increasing cost ....

    4. Don't worry there will be laws- to prevent parents from draining their children dry !!!!
Hospitals & clinics will profit from these procedures .......

    1. Pay for it lah.... I'm sure doctors will have a booming business if this really happens.
You'll have young people selling their blood to pay for school, hp, vacations etc.... scary but hey.... anything is possible:)

    1. Though it may be available soon in a clinic near you, at the moment you need to get serious injured in some accident before the hospital can give you some blood - also it might not be from a younger person than yourself ....lol.... so figure it out ....lol...

    2. Doubt it will be available soon- though I hope it will be. I'm pushing 30 & might need it very soon....hahhaha...
But right now they are only doing it on mice people !

  8. Fact is, they have been doing blood transfusion for a long time already- for medical reasons of course. So I don't see why this is anything different- just that, this claim that younger blood can help with rejuvenation is still unproven.

But who knows this could really work. Theoretically it does make sense- & many people hope this would work! And I'm sure they would have no trouble looking for money for research as if this pens out it could mean big bucks for whoever that's involved!

  10. In the hospitals sick patients regularly get blood transfusions, however the anonymous nature of the donated blood means there has been no tracking of effects of donor age. The question is are we prematurely aging people by transfusing them with older blood?
Imagine you are already sick & you get older blood .......

    1. No wonder some fare better than the rest. If you are 60 & you get transfuse with a 20 yr old NS boy donor's blood -boy- you're in luck. But say you are 18 & you get a 40 yr old blood- you get older immediately, healing also slowly probably !

    2. What's the cut off age for blood donation ?

      Delete
    3. Don't think there's an official cut off age , as long as you are healthy- so technically speaking if a 50 yr old is healthy, he can still donate blood !

      Delete
    4. But why would you even donate when you can sell at a later date?

    5. Hello everyone, this is still in the experimental stage with mice !

    6. You never know, people might be doing it for ages already! Wait for fda to approve will take ages!

    8. If it's possible or effective, botox can close shop for GOOD ...haha...

  11. Hmmm..... should I -banked my blood now so that I can use it when I'm older? I figure if this comes true, it'll cost 10s of 1000s of dollars & only the rich can afford !
